Lightroom: Complete Workflow & Editing Guide
Lightroom is a workflow and editing tool used by photographers to organize sessions, edit RAW files, and export polished final images. It is not long-term storage. It is not Photoshop. It is your organizational and tonal editing foundation.

Importing & Cataloging Sessions
This is where most beginner mistakes happen. Strong catalog habits prevent lost sessions and disk space errors.
Build Folder Structure First
Use an SSD if possible. Create a main folder: Photography.
Inside → Create Year folders (2026).
Inside each year → Create categories: Family, Scenery, Jobs, etc.
- Photography
- → 2026
- → Family
- → 02-17-2026_SmithFamily
Import Settings
Choose Copy when importing from an SD card.
Select your Year folder → category → then create the session folder.
Bottom right of the Import screen shows the drive + file path. This confirms where RAW files are saved.
Rename Files During Import
Turn on file renaming. Example: SmithFamily_001
Exporting Edited Images
- Click Export
- Create folder inside job folder named Edited_SmithFamily
Keep RAW files until job is fully delivered. Clients often request changes weeks later.
RAW vs JPEG
- RAW: Larger files, more recovery flexibility.
- JPEG: Smaller files, less flexible.
RAW files look flat because they contain unprocessed data. Lightroom adds polish.
Editing RAW Images
Exposure
Right = brighter. Left = darker.
Highlights
Left = recover blown highlights.
Shadows
Right = lift dark areas.
Contrast
Increase slightly for depth.
Temperature
Right = warmer. Left = cooler.
Vibrance
Boost muted colors while protecting skin.
Common mistake: Over editing. Lightroom is for clean tonal adjustments.
Lightroom Maintenance
- Keep 20–30% of drive free
- Delete rejected photos
- Archive delivered sessions
- Purge Camera Raw Cache
Edit → Preferences → Performance → Purge Camera Raw Cache
Use an SSD for catalog + active sessions to keep Lightroom fast.
