Layers & Masking
What Are Layers?
Layers stack on top of each other. Each layer can be adjusted independently without permanently changing your original image.
Layer Masks
Click “Add Layer Mask” → Paint black to hide → Paint white to reveal.
Masking is safer than erasing. It allows adjustments without destroying pixels.
Cropping, Resizing & Adjustments
Crop Tool
Press C → Adjust frame → Press Enter.
Resize Image
Image → Image Size → Set 300 DPI for print, 72 DPI for web.
Adjustment Layers
Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Choose Brightness/Contrast, Levels, Curves.
Always use Adjustment Layers instead of editing directly on the background.
Installing Brushes, Fonts & Presets
Brushes (.abr)
Window → Brushes → Menu → Import Brushes.
Fonts
Download font → Double click → Click Install.

Presets
Edit → Presets → Preset Manager → Load.
Always confirm licensing before commercial use.
Advanced Retouching & AI Tools
Advanced tools should be used with restraint. If someone can clearly tell Photoshop was used, it was likely overdone.
AI Generative Fill
Lasso Tool → Select object → Click Generative Fill → Review results.
Background Blur
Select Subject → Inverse Selection → Filter → Gaussian Blur.
Dodge & Burn
New Layer → Soft Light → Low opacity brush → Paint white (brighten), black (darken).
Frequency Separation
Duplicate background twice.
Blur bottom copy (tone layer).
Apply Image on top copy (texture layer).
Retouch tone and texture separately.
Blur bottom copy (tone layer).
Apply Image on top copy (texture layer).
Retouch tone and texture separately.
Preserve natural skin texture. Plastic skin is a clear sign of over editing.

JPEG

PSD files can become extremely large. Archive completed projects externally to avoid disk space errors.
